Anapaya PathGuard subscriptions and usage

The users of a PathGuard service need access to the SCION Internet. With PathGuard, the enterprise pays for this access. The users buy nothing and configure nothing. This page explains the subscription and what the SNAPs measure. Your reseller gives you the prices.

The sponsored subscription

A sponsored subscription is a SCION subscription that an enterprise buys for the users of its service. The users access the SCION Internet only for this service, and the enterprise pays for their traffic.

The enterprise buys the subscription from a reseller. The Authentication and Authorization (AA) service maps the login of each user to the subscription. The SNAP reports the usage, and the reseller bills the enterprise based on it. The users do no onboarding.

When the user logs in, the AA service maps the credential of the user to the sponsored subscription. The user does not need a SCION account, a contract, or a payment method. How it works shows the steps.

The two parts of the subscription

A PathGuard subscription has two parts:

  • SCION endhost data (SED): The access to the SCION Internet through the SNAPs. SED is volume-based, with tiers.
  • Hidden Path Access (HPA): The invisibility of the service. It covers the registration of the hidden AS with the HSD, the access policies, and the requests of the users for the hidden segments.

What the SNAP measures

The SNAP measures the traffic that it carries for each subscription. It reports the traffic volume for each subscription. The reseller bills the sponsored subscription based on these reports.

The SNAP measures only the traffic of the applications that use the subscription. Traffic on the public Internet, for example the login at an identity provider on the public Internet, is not part of the subscription.

How to buy a subscription

You buy the subscription from a SCION subscription reseller. Anapaya is a reseller, and SNAP providers and implementation partners can also be resellers. The reseller sets the price, the terms, and the bundles.
