Anapaya EDGE deployment modes
This section demonstrates the different deployment modes for Anapaya EDGE. Depending on the ISP, site and appliance redundancy requirements, we recommend the Single, Connected, Disconnected, and Independent EDGE deployment modes.
Single EDGE
The single EDGE setup consists of a single EDGE appliance with one or more SCION links to an ISP. This setup is suitable for small deployments where redundancy is not a concern.
The single EDGE setup does not provide redundancy or high availability. If the appliance fails or is being upgraded, all traffic will be interrupted. It is recommended to use this setup only for testing or development purposes, or in scenarios where downtime is acceptable.
Refer to the deployment example for detailed configuration instructions.
Connected EDGEs
To provide redundancy and high availability, this setup uses two connected EDGE appliances from the same SCION ISD-AS configured as a cluster. This allows them to share provider uplinks, automatically exchange path information, and take over each other's traffic in case of a failure, ensuring seamless uplink redundancy for larger deployments where uptime is critical.
Requirements:
- Two EDGE appliances each with at least one SCION link to an ISP.
- Both appliances must be part of the same SCION ISD-AS.
- The appliances must be connected to each other via the LAN.
Supported LAN integrations:
- Single Site
- Multiple Sites
Refer to the deployment example for detailed configuration instructions.
Disconnected EDGEs
This setup uses two EDGE appliances that are not directly connected but share the same SCION ISD-AS. This is suitable for deployments where appliances are in different physical locations without direct connectivity.
Requirements:
- Two EDGE appliances each with at least one SCION link to an ISP.
- Both appliances must be part of the same SCION ISD-AS.
Supported LAN integrations:
Limitations:
- VRRP is not supported in this setup, as the appliances are not directly connected.
- The appliances cannot share provider uplinks, therefore redundancy is limited to the appliances themselves.
In case obtaining a second SCION ISD-AS number is not an issue, prefer to configure EDGEs in the independent EDGE mode instead.
Refer to the deployment example for detailed configuration instructions.
Extended disconnected EDGEs
This setup is an extension of the disconnected EDGEs, where instead of two appliances, four EDGE appliances that share the same SCION ISD-AS are used. This setup is suitable for deployments where appliances are in different physical locations without direct connectivity, but where redundancy inside a site is critical. The four appliances are arranged in two disconnected clusters, each cluster consisting of two connected appliances. This allows for site redundancy between the clusters, while still being able to provide ISP redundancy within each cluster.
Requirements:
- Four EDGE appliances with at least one SCION link to an ISP each.
- All appliances must be part of the same SCION ISD-AS.
Supported LAN integrations:
Limitations:
- The appliances only share provider uplinks within their clusters but not between clusters.
- VRRP is only supported within the clusters, not between them.
Independent EDGEs
This setup uses two independent EDGE appliances, each operating as its own SCION ISD-AS. This is suitable when appliances are in different physical locations without direct connectivity, or when the EDGE appliances are managed by different entities.
Requirements:
- Two EDGE appliances each with at least one SCION link to an ISP.
- Each appliance must be part of its own SCION ISD-AS.
Supported LAN integrations:
Limitations:
- VRRP is not supported in this setup, as the appliances are not directly connected.
Refer to the Single EDGE deployment example for detailed configuration instructions.
Extended independent EDGEs
This setup is an extension of the independent EDGEs, where instead of two appliances, four EDGE appliances grouped into two SCION ISD-AS are used. This setup is suitable for deployments where appliances are in different physical locations without direct connectivity, or when the EDGE appliances are managed by different entities, but where redundancy inside a site is critical.
Requirements:
- Four EDGE appliances with at least one SCION link to an ISP each.
- Each pair of appliances must be part of its own SCION ISD-AS.
Supported LAN integrations:
Limitations:
- The appliances only share provider uplinks within their SCION ISD-AS but not between them.
- VRRP is only supported within the SCION ISD-AS, not between them.
